MUSIC IN MANCHESTER

CAMPAG VELOCET
NME TOUR
MANCHESTER ACADEMY  SAT 22/1/00

Forewarned is forearmed, so thanks to Wendy ear plugs reside in pocket.
Campaq VeloctYet what is this?  A student gig and THE BANDS START TO TIME!!!!!!   Next thing students will be turning up to lectures. The youth of today, no wonder the country is going down the pan when the icons of freedom & so called rebellion are found to be queuing quietly in an orderly fashion.
So what will they make made of Campaq Velocet?  Sure there was a 3/4 filled venue, but I got the impression that most of them had come to see Les Rhythm Digitales or Shack, the students merely stocking up on beer before the main event.
No soft sound, regular beats with this, but a pulsating, excoriating, shortened set from a band led by a vocalist who hangs on to the mic stand as if on clinging for his life.  But Pete Vosshe is only preparing himself, ready to raise the intensity, as he drags his spindly frame in anticipation of the next onslaught
A stripped down set, but no easing up on the power.  Bon Chic Bon Genre is not so much dragged from the depths of Pete Voss’s bowel, but more spat out with an intensity and ferocity of a blow torch
The strobes kick into play; a false daylight acting as a backdrop against a malevolent sound
Its not tuneful, but weirdly hypnotic, grabbing you attention forcing you to take notice
Insidiously creeping inside your head, rotting your brain, Drencon Velocet rattles from side to side as riffs attack you from inside the speakers
You know you shouldn’t like it but you do.   You want to resist but you can’t
There is no escape from the Camp of Velocet
