MUSIC IN MANCHESTER

(Manchester Bands Section)

Prolekult feat.
Desolation Angels
Night & Day  28/11/00

The lights are dimmed, candles filling the area with dancing shadows
The drinks are on the tables and the music is playing.  This is not some seduction scene, well sort of, but not sexually. Welcome to Prolekult.  Tonight your MC is Captain Starfield AKA Jackie O, someone who says he only feels confident on stage when he is wearing a guitar
In a week when Madonna secured a million pound refit courtesy of Dolce & Gabanna, one of Manchester's music venues also had a one night refit that whilst not as expensive, still produced a significant, positive, change on the atmosphere.
The extra space on stage, as opposed to the normal lack of it in other venues seems to free up the Desolation Angels, to release them from the worries of hitting someone else’s instrument or tripping up over loose leads.
More used of late to playing a type of acoustic set without a drummer, tonight Desolation Angels were joined by Tim Bonebox on sticks. The early numbers continued in this recent acoustic vein, more controlled, more focussed.
Then the routine changes and as the frequently underused lights bursts into flashing life, so do the Angels, as they step up a gear, flashing guitars and keyboard riffs, driven on by Tim.
A false start by Somewhere over Tokyo, as one says "Totally outside their control" seem to add to the initial nervousness of the band, but once things got underway, momentum was quickly recovered.  With two front men mixing the desks, backed by bassist & drummer, they produced a ride though a varied and colourful integration of styles.
Sufficiently varied to avoid becoming monotonous, fresh enough to generate interest, clever enough to hold it
Thus the first formal debut of Prolekult, run primarily by the Angels in association with other bands/individuals who have like minded views, came to an end
 Next installment 18/12/00
Featuring: Jackie O, Tsuji Giri, Desloation Angels & ANO
