MUSIC IN MANCHESTER

Drugstore @ Hop & Grape
In The City: 25/9/00

Ninety minutes and they think it's all over- but it's not and she's back, they're back.
I'm biased, I know. I like her, the band and the music. It's one of life's more pleasant jobs.
Isobel doesn't as much as leave then return for the encore, but stands up, decides that it's easier to do away with the formalities of the `More, More’ ritual of etc. and promptly enters into a solo spot
Which is how she started the show. With a solo spot that is, then her partners in this production clamber on board. They tour through Isobel's visions of love, life and magic, producing a rich detailed tapestry of sound to caress the ears and mind.
Although not strictly part of the `In The City’ festival for the last couple of times it has appeared In Manchester Drugstore have been billed as the next ones to watch rise to mega stardom. It has eluded them but we all know that chart status is not necessarily a reflection upon ability

Culling extensively from the eponymous `Drugstore’, `Hello’ and `White Magic For Lovers’ LP's `Nectarine’, `White Magic’, `Kill the President’ are aired to a biased crowd sycophantically hanging on every note. The latest single `Love You Like a Man’ from the new LP doesn't show any radical change in musical direction but she has kept the knack of finding a good tune

At times she isn't so much playing a song as acting as a raconteur, regaling the females of the audience with her experiences of how men seem to expect you to behave, how meek and demure the wish you to be. Later she tell us that Jeff Buckley nicked one of her songs. Whether it is true or not doesn't matter tonight, it's how she tells it
When released of vocal and guitar duties, she sits on the edge of the stage, watching the proceedings, half in and half out of the crowd, re-inforcing the bond between audience & artist
Before the re-start, not one member of the audience has left, awaiting the last drop of emotion from the Brazilian songstress and her band.
Until next time
