It’s the voice that hits you first. Striking. Clear & pure. Then it changes to a deep throated ever increasing growl. Zoe
McVeigh, lead singer with this Manchester based band that has been around for approx. 12 months certainly doesn’t
believe in holding back from putting feeling into Hooker’s songs as she spins between spewing out the lyrics, then
delicately caressing your ears.
The set gets stronger as each song not so much as passes you by but walks up to you
belts you in the face then continues on. Not necessarily a pretty sound as in nice
`Guitar Band’ that can sucker you with a hummable hook line, but heavily bass and
drum driven they grab your attention with ever changing, refreshing sounds.
You begin to wonder if you have heard then before. Is it influenced by the Fall, or
does it touch on, dare I say, a Goth revival? For the time being who cares, its still
invigorating and full of promise. There’s no record deal in sight yet for this 4 piece,
but who said that was any sign of good music?
To prove that the what goes around, comes around, approximately two years ago I
saw a band called Linoleum, who later released a record called Dissent, which so
influenced a bass player that he became involved in a band called Hooker, who I saw
tonight.
