Icons of Poundland
Pure Space 25/11/02

The debut live appearance by a new band is normally a low key affair, involving being on first at about eight p.m. before anyone has gotten into the venue, playing to the roadies and acting a basic sound check for the main band later.  Tonight though there is an air of expectancy over the debut of the quirkily titled "Icons of Poundland"   After all, most people have experience the "Loafer" movement a some time within the last 4 years, so Julian, Kester & Alex are all familiar faces. So to is Kate Polythenes', as she seems to have played drums from almost every decent band that has emerged from Manchester.
And they're not due on till 11:30 in a venue that's only recently turned itself towards the live music (bands) scene.  So will they be carrying the "Loafer" baggage with them, or will inclinations be towards the "Icons of Uncool" sideline that Kester & Julian explored earlier this year?
The answer comes with the opening chords of current single "Nothing but love & good vibes" a roaring slice of expunged energy, that rocks the place down.  The acoustics are fine, the stage size just about right, and the lighting is dark, the way it should be.   After the first 3 numbers are dispensed with in rapid style, the pace naturally slows down, but the new harder, direct image is established.
Julian snarls his lyric is his usual style but he's got a smile on his face, enjoying the occasion. Or maybe its because he's taking the piss with a jumper that would immediately command a jail sentence were the style police on hand to witness the crime.
But that doesn't matter as the harder mix of ska, punk and northern soul get people onto the floor, and yes, they dance as though they are enjoying it.
They may be icons of poundland, but they ain't cheap, except for current single "Nothing but love & good vibes" & House Doubles (Icon001CD) which is available from Piccadilly record for the disturbingly low sum of £1
"Stole my smile" will appear on the forthcoming aA produced "Whores on the doors" compilation album See http://www.akoustikanarkhy.co.uk for details
