Linoleum
Manchester Roadhouse 19/9/00

How long, 2-3 years? It was the result of sifting through the vinyl 7” racks and regularly seeing a single lain there for so long, almost pleading to be played as if it would not disappoint you, that I stumbled across Linoleum. I bought and I wasn’t. The single `On a Tuesday’ consequently led to collecting Linoleum’s debut album Dissent, the only down side being that a special edition version was spied a week later.
But as quickly as I had got the sounds, eagerly anticipating more, nothing else was heard, they were presumed defunct.
Until last year when they released a split single with Sing Sing, did they re-appear. Almost prolifically they released this year their version of the Passions song `I’m in Love With a German Films Star’ plus an LP, all without barely any attention. Either this band personify the low key approach or they have a crap manager .
So I'm here at the Roadhouse on what seems a poorly advertised short tour, partially out of a sense of curiosity being sated Indeed there are maybe only 30-50 punters gathered around as the revised, current 4 piece line up on a wet Tuesday night in Manchester
The delicate guitar and breathy vocals on `Fin’ & `Your Back Again’ promise much.
`Film Star’ is a fairly close remake but live takes on an extra, harder edge that raises hopes, and `On a Tuesday' sounds as fresh as it was all those years ago
Inexplicably, then the pace slackens and momentum expires almost to a Goth like rumble.

You want them to do well because there are flashes of originality, energy and potential, but it seems to be over much too soon
