STRANGE WEATHER & LOAFER (Jabez Clegg 24/5/00)

Wisely waiting until after the match had finished (Madrid won 3-0 since you ask) Strange Weather take to the temporary erected stage seemingly located within a room resembling more of a church than a site for live music. A new venue promoting live music is always to be welcomed, though the Jabez is more familiar to students and locals as `The `Bop’ - a home to (relatively) cheap beer & DJ’s hammering out the typical eclectic mix of 80’s & 90’s music

So when Strange Weather attempt to treat it as a `proper’ gig, the resultant sound is not best suited to a live environment, the high arched roof merely serving to provide weird echoes and amplify the sound so that the pain threshold appears to be within easy reach.

At one point during the second number I began to believe that they were turning into a death thrash metal band but only because of the resultant mix. When thing did settle down, the nucleus of some good songs appeared to be there, but the moments were fleeting before the wash of unplanned special effect kicked in

Promoter Richard has the intention of providing a temporary blanket to reduce the ceiling height and hopefully negate some of the extreme effects, but as with everything else it takes time and money, but let’s hope that he get what he wants

Loafer take the stage in a chirpy mood, replete with keyboards (Kester Jones) and a nice line in self-deprecating humour. Tonight they will need it

With the audience sat so far back, resembling the tide gone out at Blackpool, it’s difficult to generate any interaction between band & audience. The scene resembles more of a cabaret effect, so much so vocalist Julian Gaskell comments that the evening appears more like `Rick Wakeman On Ice’

Combined with a lack of feedback the overall mix and lack of audience participation make it difficult for any band to generate a head of steam, but both band try.

By the time Loafer get to their final song, `Billy Blag’ snippets of songs have begun to emerge from the morass of sound.

This evening though, it’s 1-0 to the venue
