Loose a record deal. Loose 12 months of your career. Loose the power at tonight's gig. You might think that this
sequence of events would break most bands. Instead, Nylon Pylon front man Stubbsy turns around, ironic grin
breaking out across his face, shouts out "Lets just do it" and we are up and
running again, technical problems not being allowed to get them down
So the equipment set up nowadays is a bit more teccie for Pylon; fancy
displays replacing the more traditional keyboards etc., but the original bass
shuddering effect of their customary brash electro punk number "New York is
still there, amplified in the cathedral like ambience of Jabez Clegg
The large venue is almost full, partially as a result of the seemingly
never-ending promotion of "Vman" himself and the supporting bands/artists
who have brought their own followers, from the singer/song writing skills of
Amelia Coyle, to the heavier rock of "Change the Channel" via the angular
Green Dayish of Karmacops, who sport a flying V guitar, the likes of which
have not been seen since the early 70's
and immediately heads are twisting
and bodies writhing as the spiky,
sometimes brutal clash of guitars,
drum & synths makes a welcome high
profile return to Manchester. Never
having really "been away" live
performances have trended to be kept
at a premium as recording "issues"
have diverted their attention. The
enthusiastic reception they get tonight shows how much they are appreciated
in their native north.
When they ignore the "My D Drum is missing" comments from the Bo Walsh
(drummer), they quickly build a head of momentum with their energy laden
sound, and the energy & visceral blast that eventually emerges from the
speakers galvanises the enthusiastic crowd. (Note they are not blindly drunk
as there are only 2 staff serving upstairs!)
Tonight's events probably mimic the ups and downs of the last 12 months -
potential, promise and a series of problems, but the sense of relief they get
from playing live is almost palpable, and as long as they can smile through it,
they will hopefully get what their talent deserves
