MUSIC IN MANCHESTER

Radio 4
Roadhouse 9/12/02

By the time the band get around to playing the aptly titled "Dance to the Underground", the entranced crowd are already bouncing around, thoroughly enjoying this latest NY export that bears less in common musically with other recent NY based compatriots in music. The well packed turn out on a freezing night found plenty to get them warmed up. Sparking off a band who stated that they we're "so glad to be in Manchester `coz we've ripped off so many bands from there"
Whatever happens in America, happens over here sooner of later and "Dance to the Underground" is an ode to the repressive stances regarding dancing licenses at clubs in NY. Some places are being closed down due to people allegedly "dancing to the (jukebox) music without the pre-requisite dancing license being purchased.

Think it can't happen over her? It already has to two venues in London, so if you care about the music, start by joining the petition, details of which are on a post on the Manchestermusic board.

The irony is that this weird amalgam of Talking heads welded to the energy of the Cramps with a sprinkling of several of bands including the Clash, Fall New Order etc. doesn't fail to get people up and share in the energy that this 5 piece are throwing into the music. Despite it being a month long tour a long way from home, the band show no sign of lacking in impetus, frequently struggling to find the space on the stage for all the band and equipment to remain there.

So Thom Radiohead listens to Radio 4 does he? He must know better than Radio 1
