MUSIC IN MANCHESTER

Super Furry Animals
Night & Day 16/6/01

Sweat poured down the walls on the packed N & D, but nobody was complaining; they were all too busy savoring the intimate atmosphere, lending itself to the second leg of the Super Furry Animals 48 hour (approx.) stop in Manchester.
With a similar arrangement to the "Spin the Wheel" theme used by Elvis Costello, 92 (!!) songs were listed on the wall cloth, for the band, lined up predominately as a 4 piece.     One expertly trained operator, called the numbered balls, cueing a mass 90 degree craning of necks, each person hoping that it would be their personal favourite.
Except for the band who appear to hope it would be one they could remember the into to. Quizzical expressions were amusingly exchanged in the relaxed climate.     And if the band couldn't remember, well then there was the massive sound system mounted centre stage to fall back on, playing snippets of said songs before moving on to the next number.
So for an hour, "The Placid Casual", "The Citizens Band", "Ymaelodi Ar Ymylon" "Crynod Yn Dy Lais" "Shoot Doris Day" and others made their appearance.    Sometimes there were 4 players on stage, sometimes 3 as Bumf traipsed back to the changing rooms allegedly "after banging his head in the shower"
Somehow the number for the traditional set closer "The Man Don't Give a F###" was pulled from cage, cueing mass audience participation, before the bands slipped out to prepare for the evening gig
