Starsailor
Roadhouse 16/1/01

So who is Mathew J?  Well he's a singer songwriter that very few people seem to know a lot about.  Starsailor thanked him so the probably invited him, feeling that his acoustic set would counter balance theirs.  And it does.  Yet classification in the Tim/Jeff Buckley section of the record racks beckons for his forthcoming LP.  The songs are well crafted and executed, but I wonder what the effect of having a band - Starsailor? - behind him
No introductions precede Starsailor as they meander on stage, almost apologetically to a packed Roadhouse, then perfectly execute `Fever'.
So fame beckons, can they survive the hype?  Who knows, but if this 4 piece can't it wont be for a lack of good songs for James Walsh to put his seductive voice to.  Nothing to break down barriers, incite riots or that will lead to political unrest, but deceptively catchy, rocking choons.  As `Alcoholic' follows `Loser`, they reel of a series of potential hit in this 7 number set, even managing to weld a cover of `Hot Burrito' into their style. No obviously guitar. bass or keyboard solos, but each can make the mark as per when the drums kick in for the final number `Good Souls'
They are still at the stage where they obviously enjoy what they are doing and translate that into effort on the stage. So if some record company wants to throw oodles of money in their direction, well good luck to them
