Tribeca
Dry Bar 15/11/00

Two gigs, three songs, that's all I've managed to get so see of Monroe Stahr, despite getting down here specifically to see them after their vibrant appearance at the Girly Show.  Even so the energy sound produced for two numbers I catch here are enough to make one sit up and take notice.  Next time, I'll get there on time, honest
Three piece The Jokers have brought a fair portion of the crowd here tonight, and with their bright, summery tunes its easy enough to see why.  The catchy numbers are done well, but tonight its raining, I'm wet and sober.  Perhaps they need to get a bit angrier, and by the time they do on "How High" its nearing the end of the set.  Having said that, I'd hate to see the drummer get angry, after seeing how he attacks his skins
Technical problems seem to snarl up the brief appearance by Tribeca. Their use of percussion, tapes with the staples of guitar, drums & Marie's voice can produce a rich tapestry of beats and rhythms that are infectious. and certainly the 3rd number, "City breeze", a seemingly effortless rolling, reggae tinged number that takes you to back to those sunny beaches, drinks and feel good memories
There're best heard in a venue in which the beats can drip down the wall and bounce around your body a few times, but tonight, with the tapes & desk problems, the delays between numbers and the bright lights, the Dry Bar isn't one of them.
