So was it really worth it? Personally, if it gets people off their arses, away from their telly/video/CD player etc. going to see live bands and feeding something back into the grass roots of music, then it will always be worth it.
Valued? Depends on your point of view. Music is an industry and as such everybody seemingly wants their cut. That's the rule and if you want to succeed you need to know it. Knocking on the door from the outside, seldom gets you any wear.
Hype of the moment was getting to see "Sonica Grande", Luke Bainbridge's (City Life) bright hopes at the Dancehouse. For once wearing a blue riband was not guaranteed to get you in, though at least I did queue with Jim Goodwin (Doves). Judging by the number of people who go past with the "he's in the band mate" adage, it was disappointing not to see a 10 piece playing inside
Of course there were a lot of bands that didn't stand out from the glut on display, but viewing the visceral performance from Jackie O, featuring Captain Starfield and his purveyors of surf, garage and all things Elvis still elicits a smile, even as I type this.
Similarly, watching people such as the Sovs, Aa and all the others on the local "scene" that have been putting so much effort into it for a long time now re-inforces ones belief that there is now a momentum and enthusiasm for developing the music, a network that hopefully will allow other acts to have a platform on which to perform
The DIY ethic of Flawed was to be admired when they pulled up in a truck outside the BBC and played to punters moving between the venues. This included Tony (Anthony H ) Wilson who minutes earlier had been stopped from entering Poo Naa Na as the place was crammed to capacity. The irony of someone not being able to get into his own event was not missed
By the way, "15 Minutes of Fame" was a bar on the first floor of the Midland Hotel where all the drinks were free for 15 minutes. I can live with that sort of fame.
